Findon Valley Free Church (Baptist)

The pre-school was founded in 1966 by two ladies (Mollie Burton and Rosemary Jones) after recognising that there was little opportunity for young children to play and learn together in Findon Valley. It is situated in the church hall and the activities revolve around various ‘workshop’ areas. Children are encouraged to select resources independently, learn to use them and look after them appropriately and help to tidy away. Each session comprises a mixture of self-chosen activities (free play) such as role play, small world play or drawing, structured adult-led activities such as crafts, assault course, dancing or games, stories, songs, and circle times when children learn to sit and listen and speak in front of a group. Our activities are generally based on children’s interests and needs.

In addition the pre-school has purpose-built toilets, a small kitchen area and a fully enclosed, well-equipped outdoor area where children can ride bikes and scooters, play with balls and hoops, enjoy the challenging climbing equipment, and experiment with sand and water. We have a small garden where children derive so much pleasure from growing and planting flowers, strawberries and vegetables such as potatoes, peas and tomatoes and learning how to care for them. We provide food for birds and habitats for insects and we have facilities to keep tadpoles and butterflies and observe their development. The outdoor area is open every day for the majority of the session, even when raining!
